“Summertime and the Living is Easy” as the song goes. What the song doesn’t mention are the insects, all kinds of insects including the biting and stinging ones: Ants, bees, wasps, yellow jackets, deer flies, black flies, no-see-ums and mosquitoes and they’re all out to get you!
Many of you enjoy the great Florida outdoors. There’s fishing, hiking, beaches, state parks, all sorts of ways to enjoy what Florida has to offer. However, it comes with a price. You may have to deal with deer flies, yellow flies, black flies and if you’re near the coast, the biting midges (no-see-ums) will drive you out of your mind! You may be asking yourself, what can I do to relieve this summertime misery? You may find relief by taking a drive to your nearby drug store, where you’ll find a large assortment of insect repellents.
Now, imagine reaching for your favorite chilled beverage only to find a honey bee sneaking a sip. Imagine not seeing the bee and without the knowledge of it being there, you take a big gulp. You may ingest it in your mouth or even worse, into your stomach. If it stings you, the pain would be unbearable and even life threatening…Immediate medical help would be needed. So, take care while drinking your favorite chilled beverage and look before you take that refreshing big gulp!
Florida is cursed with several different species of mosquitoes. They come in a variety of sizes. Some are strictly night feeders and others feed during the day or at dusk and dawn. There’s no getting away from them while enjoying an outdoor cookout or any other outside activity. Products containing Deet work very well against menacing mosquitoes. Eliminating breeding sites from around your home is the number one defense when battling this pest. Some examples of breeding sites are: Birdbaths, wading pools, leaky outdoor pipes and faucets, air conditioner units, etc. Birdbaths should be emptied and refilled on a weekly basis. And keep in mind, any standing water is a potential breeding site.
We may be able to help as well through our “Pro Star Mosquito Program”! This program has been proven to give relief around homes and other structures for an extended period of time.
So, enjoy your summer and remember to play hard and play safe.
