Ghost ants are one of Florida’s most common household pests, and once they’re in, they can feel almost impossible to shake. They get their name from their appearance: a dark head with a pale, nearly transparent abdomen and legs that make them incredibly hard to spot on light-colored surfaces. They’re tiny too—usually less than 1/16 of an inch long.
What makes ghost ants so persistent is how their colonies are structured. Unlike many ant species that have a single queen, ghost ant colonies have multiple queens spread across several nesting sites. That’s why DIY sprays so rarely work for long; you might wipe out one group, but the others just fill the gap and keep going.
They’re drawn indoors by moisture and sweet food sources, so kitchens and bathrooms are their favorite spots. They’ll nest inside wall voids, behind baseboards, and even inside potted plants.
