"What Does a Flea Look Like – and How Do I Know If I Have Them?"
Fleas are tiny, but don’t let their size fool you – they’re one of the most disruptive pests you can deal with, especially if you have pets at home. What does a flea look like to the naked eye? They’re small reddish-brown insects, with a distinctly flat, hunched body shape. They’ve got six legs, two antennae, and backward-pointing bristles along their bodies that help them move lightning-fast through fur, hair, and fabric. How big is a flea? Think roughly the size of a sesame seed. They’re usually under ⅛” in size—small enough to miss at a glance, but visible if you know what you’re looking for.
One of the most common questions people ask is do fleas have wings? They don’t. What makes them seem like they’re flying is their incredibly powerful hind legs, which can launch them up to seven inches in a single leap. That’s how they jump from pets to carpets to furniture so effortlessly, and why they’re so hard to catch once they’re on the move.
What do flea eggs look like? They’re even harder to spot—tiny, oval-shaped, and white, roughly the size of a grain of salt. A single female flea can lay up to 40 eggs per day, so what starts as a small problem can escalate very quickly. You might also notice “flea dirt” in your pet’s fur—tiny black specks that are actually a mix of flea feces, eggs, and larvae. If you see it, there’s a very good chance there are plenty more hiding nearby.
Fleas don’t give up easily, and they’re experts at staying out of sight until the infestation is already well established.
