How to clean up after rodents
When you’ve caught rodents in traps or driven them out of your home, the next step is to clean up after the mess they’ve made. Depending on how long they’ve been in your house and the way you’ve gotten rid of them, you may have to clean up after:
- Droppings and urine
- Nests and surrounding filth
- Dead rodents
When cleaning up after rodents in your home, you have to be sure to protect your skin and use disinfecting agents.
Cleaning Up Rodent Droppings and Urine
When you find rodent droppings or urine in your house, it’s important not to vacuum or sweep the waste or surrounding area. This can stir up dust and spread the waste, potentially contributing to the spreading of dangerous germs.
Instead, wearing rubber, latex, or vinyl gloves, spray the droppings or urine with a disinfectant or a mixture of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. Let it soak for 5 minutes before wiping everything up with a paper towel and disposing of the waste in a sealed garbage bag. To be extra careful, disinfect surrounding items that you think might have been exposed to the droppings.

Getting Rid of Dead Rodents and Nests
If you’ve set a rodent bait station or snap trap that worked, you’ll have to get rid of the rodent (and possibly its nest) yourself. The same way you would for droppings, use gloves and a disinfectant solution to spray the rodent or nest and remove it safely. After letting your chosen spray sit for 5 minutes, dispose of everything carefully in a sealable trash bag. Be sure to place the garbage bag in an outdoor bin that is emptied regularly. Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling rodent waste, nests, or the animals themselves.
