How Do I Use Boric Acid to Kill Cockroaches?

"Where should I put boric acid, and how much do I need?"

Got roaches and a box of boric acid? Let’s talk about how to make it work. Using boric acid for roaches is one of the oldest tricks in the book, but if you don’t apply it properly, it won’t work.

Placement is everything. Apply a thin, barely visible layer of boric acid dust behind your fridge, under the stove, along baseboards, beneath sinks, and inside cabinets. Roaches stick to dark, warm, and damp areas, so that’s where you want to focus. Just don’t overdo it—if you can clearly see the powder, you’ve used too much, and they’ll walk right around it.

Another trick? Mix a small amount of boric acid with sugar or peanut butter. The sweet stuff draws them in, and the boric acid dust does the rest, destroying their gut and drying them out from the inside. Even better, they carry it back to the nest and spread it to other roaches. Although effective, this method can attract other pests, so use it sparingly.

You may also have heard of boric acid pills for roaches. These pre-made tablets offer a compact alternative for hard-to-reach areas. They’re more convenient than loose powder but work on the same principle and share the same limitations—boric acid stops working when wet, isn’t safe around kids or pets, and is really only effective for small problems.

If you’re in Florida, where our heat and humidity create a cockroach paradise, professional treatment is a more reliable, long-term option.
