How Do I Know If I Have Termites?

Florida Pest Answers

"I've noticed some odd damage around the house—how can I tell if it's termites or something else? "

Good question! Termites are sneaky. They work from the inside out, so there may already be damage before you even notice they’re there. However, there are some early warning signs of termites that can tip you off before things get serious.

First up, tap on any wood that looks suspicious, like baseboards, door frames, or window sills. If it sounds hollow or feels soft and papery, that’s a concern. You might also notice paint that’s bubbling or cracking for no obvious reason, which can happen when termites are tunneling just beneath the surface. Mud tubes running along your foundation, walls, or crawl space are another big giveaway; these are the highways subterranean termites build to travel between their colony and your home.

How to tell if you have termites versus other damage? Telltale signs include tiny piles of what looks like sawdust or coffee grounds near wood; these could be frass (drywood termite droppings), or discarded wings near windows or doors, which usually mean swarmers have been visiting. Equally, if your doors or windows suddenly feel tight or hard to open, it might not be due to humidity, but to termites chewing through them.

Unfortunately, for Florida residents, there’s no real off-season for termites; therefore, you should always stay on guard and call for professional help when you feel out of your depth. Our technicians will inspect your property and recommend the best treatment to protect your building and prevent costly damage.
