How Do You Get Rid of Roof Rats?

Florida Pest Answers

"Hearing scratching in the ceiling at night? Seeing droppings or gnaw marks along a rafter? If so, you're probably wondering whether you have roof rats and how to get rid of them."

True to their name, roof rats are expert climbers that prefer to nest high up—in attics, rafters, wall cavities, and trees—rather than down at ground level. They’re a common problem in warm, humid areas, and roof rats in Florida are especially widespread thanks to the state’s lush landscaping, fruit trees, and mild climate, which allow them to breed year-round.

So how do you actually get rid of them? The trick is to combine removal and prevention—just trapping the rats you can see won’t stop new ones from moving in. Here’s what works:

  • Seal up entry points. Roof rats can squeeze through tiny gaps, so plug cracks around rooflines, vents, eaves, pipes, and utility lines. Use steel wool, metal flashing, or hardware cloth—stuff they can’t chew through.
  • Cut off access routes. Trim tree branches back a few feet from your roof, and clear out thick shrubs, vines, and overgrowth they use as highways.
  • Remove food and water. Pick up fallen fruit and pet food, secure your trash cans, store food in airtight containers, and fix any leaks or standing water.
  • Set traps in the right spots. Snap traps work best along elevated runways—rafters, beams, and wall edges—where rats actually travel. Leave them unset for a few days first so the rats get comfortable with them.
  • Clear out nesting spots. Keep attics, garages, and storage areas tidy so there’s nowhere cozy for them to hide.

Roof rats breed quickly, spread disease, contaminate food, and chew through wiring (which is a real fire hazard), so a small problem can quickly blow up. If you keep hearing noises, finding fresh droppings, or the rats just won’t quit, professional pest control is your best bet for clearing them out and keeping them away.
