When is Termite Season in Florida?

"You've spotted a swarm of winged insects near a sunny window—so is it time to worry about termites, and when exactly does termite season hit in Florida?"

Unlike much of the country, Florida doesn’t really get a break from termites. Thanks to the state’s year-round warm temperatures and high humidity, termites remain active from January to December. So when people ask, “When is termite season?”, the honest answer for Florida is all year—though there are definitely peak times when swarming (and your risk of a new infestation) spikes.

These peak periods vary slightly by species, which is why homeowners face virtually non-stop pressure:

  • Subterranean termites typically swarm in spring, from around February through May, usually on warm, humid days after rain.
  • Drywood termites tend to swarm later, in the warmer months of late spring through summer (roughly April through July), often in the evening near lights.
  • Formosan termites—an especially destructive invasive species common in Florida—swarm on warm, humid nights from April through June, and are strongly drawn to lights.

Swarming is how termites start new colonies, so seeing winged “swarmers” (or their discarded wings) in or around your home is a major red flag that a colony may be nearby. Other warning signs include mud tubes along your foundation, hollow-sounding or blistered wood, and small piles of sawdust-like frass.

No matter the species, termites can cause serious structural damage, which is why an annual professional termite inspection—together with year-round monitoring—is the smartest way to catch problems early and protect your home.
